JOHNY MOOSE BACKWATER FARM
Johny Moose Backwater Farm – Rustic Living on the Meenachil River Nestled in the tranquil village of Aymanam, made famous by Arundhati Roy’s Booker Prize- winning novel The God of Small Things, Johny Moose Backwater Farm is a living blend of tradition, nature, and hospitality. Located on the lush banks of the Meenachil River, this 12- acre family-owned property has been in the care of Mr. Johny Moose and his family for over a century. Originally a thriving fish farm, Johny Moose Backwater Farm has earned accolades like the Best Fresh Fish Farmer – Kerala State (2013). The farm produces tilapia, along with ducks, duck eggs, coconuts, bananas, and seasonal fruits and vegetables. Select items are now available via home delivery.
Since 2016, the farm has extended its arms to tourism. ‘Ullasakottaram’, or the "Kingdom of Laziness", is the guest cottage that overlooks a serene 5-acre private pond. While simple and functional, it offers a charming escape from city life. The farm also added two new riverside rooms that face the Meenachil River—perfect for a laid-back getaway. Adventure meets nature here through a partnership with Plunge Adventures, offering kayaking, stand-up paddling, and cycling—ranked top in TripAdvisor’s “Things to Do in Kumarakom.” The farm is also open to hosting intimate events or gatherings in the 1,000 sq. ft. Ullasakottaram cottage. Whether you seek the thrill of paddling through backwaters or just want to relax under a coconut tree, Johny Moose Backwater Farm offers a truly local and peaceful experience.
