A
unique Museum to display a miraculous collection of
Nature's Art, initially shaped by seawaves and then
by the imagination of an artist through a rare and innovative
art form, is functioning at the scenic village of Kumarakom,
Kottayam. A visitor would find in the Bay Island Driftwood
Museum a huge collection of elegant wooden/root sculptures
of marvellous shapes compatible with nature. This amazing
collection represents a work of art pioneered by a lady
post graduate teacher retired from service in the Andaman
& Nicobar Islands.

During her long professional tenure in the archipelago,
she used to pick up pieces of driftwood deposited by
sea in the shores, comprising twisted tree trunks, stumps,
roots etcs which had potential for transformation to
sculptures with marginal efforts. She cleansed them,
removed unwanted parts and trimmed to the shape she
had in mind. No part is added to complete a shape. She
helped the Nature's original design to come out more
forcefully, evocatively and permanently. Many of these
pieces resemble trees, flowers, animals, birds, reptiles
amphibians and fishes. Shaping, polishing and finishing
were done with fierce dedication.
The admirers and connoisseurs of this modern form of
art frequent the institution aptly named the Bay Island
Driftwood Museum. The Museum inculcates in students
the qualities of imagination, creativity, originality
and initiation to produce useful articles out of materials
normally considered waste.
The Bay Island Driftwood Museum is the only one of its
kind in the country. This institution attracts tourists-both
foreign and domestic-as well as members of local public.
This 'must see' spot has enhanced the tourism potential
of the locality to a good extent since its inception
in the recent past.
The details of the features of the Museum are illustrated
in its website www.bay-island-museum.com.
Besides, they have recently been included in the site
www. Keralatourism.org of the Dept. of Tourism, Government
of Kerala, for the information of tourists the world
over.
